After the Conflagration
With despair still ringing in our ears from the conflagration that had advanced home by home, I walked through the blackened rubble. The smell of smoke was sweet and overpowering as I passed another street I should have recognized; I could hardly breathe. The heat made my ears ring, or was it cicadas singing. Whorls of white ash rose over invisible hotspots in the glowing timber. There was no shade from the heat between the once-narrow streets though all day the sky had looked bleak and overcast in a dingy shade of brown. But now, nearing the end of the day, I had never seen a sunset so red as the bleared rays of the lowering sun set the fallen city aflame once again in an ominous shade of premature dusk.
