Chasing Hyung Through Chiba
Case's exit from Chiba City left a gaping hole in the low-end supplier base. "People" - and one always referred to the sort of thug that came to thuggery by way of abject desperation as "people" - still needed crude weapons and cheap highs.
Package deals consisted of laser sharpened aluminum brackets with athletic tape wound handles and Dex cut with cleaning supplies ran rampant, and the mark-up was staggering. Wholesale, you could make the same items from the returns of a moderately sized recycled garbage run, but that sort of thing left a trail. Much in the same way one pays a hooker to leave, thugs paid fixers to avoid a receipt.
Connor pulled his windbreaker against the offshore breeze and began turning indiscriminately around corners. He hoped to confront chaos with chaotic behavior in order to create some sort of divide-by-zero condition wherein he'd finally be able to find his Fixer.
Hyung dealt in exotic goods in a market drowning in the world's most exotic goods. Ninety percent of the illicit merchandise pulsing through the Nisei streets so thoroughly outpaced the curve of the mainstream that no Nation State even considered considering regulation. This made Hyung so legally avante garde that conventional paranoia rang of gross understatement. He coped by living in a persistent state of erratic behavior and at precarious moral crossroads.
Thwart disaster by courting it, or as he once told Connor, "Conna', you never catch what you chase, but you always find what you avoid."
So, Connor avoided. He weaved through side side streets. He cut through restaurants and exited through kitchens. He followed no search pattern or strategy. He feared systematically covering ground would leave him open to surprise, as if Hyung would appear at his back, from a direction he covered minutes before and slap him in the back of the head.
